Eco-Drive has brought numerous breakthroughs and sustainable social significance to the watch market. Developed as a new challenge beyond half a century since its birth, the Eco-Drive 50th Anniversary Limited Edition model "Eco-Drive PHOTON" has been unveiled.
"PHOTON" refers to the quantum of light. The idea was expanded from the "double-slit experiment," where many scientists have revealed the mysterious properties of light, expressing its intuitive beauty derived from an intelligent concept through its shape. A model befitting its 50th anniversary has been born.
The design inspired by the smallest unit of light, the "PHOTON," features two metallic dials with slits that allow light to pass through, layered with a structural color film to express the way light permeates and the deep, shifting hues that change with the viewing angle.
Expressing the Functionality of Eco-Drive Itself
With Eco-Drive PHOTON, we have redefined the value of Eco-Drive. Instead of using conventional dials that allow light to pass through, we created a metallic dial with slits, designed to convey the passage of light at first glance, effectively representing its functionality.
Colors Generated by the Interference of Changing Light
Between the slit dial and the solar cell of the Eco-Drive PHOTON, we inserted a structural color film. Structural color is a phenomenon where light reflects and interferes due to fine structures to produce color. Vivid colors change with the viewing angle, peeking out from between the slits.
The design features a calm silver case and band, accentuated by the blue structural color visible between the slits. The yellow second hand adds a touch of contrast, elegantly highlighting the dial that evokes the fluctuation of light.
Multi-layered Dial with Overlapping Slits
By stacking two metal dials with slit designs, we created a pattern reminiscent of interference stripes. The dial cover also incorporates slits, achieving a three-dimensional multi-layered dial. The stripped-down design, where functionality constructs the form, produces a unique individuality.
Prior to the release of this product, there will be a preview exhibition at the Citizen Flagship Store.
